South Carolina State football opens the season at No. 1 in the 2026 Preseason HBCU FCS Coaches Poll.
SC State is coming off a 10-4 finish in 2025, winning its second consecutive MEAC title before ending the year a four-overtime win over Prairie View A&M in the Celebration Bowl. It's the program's second preseason No. 1 nod since 2010, receiving all but four first-place votes.

Trailing South Carolina State in the top-five of the preseason poll is Prairie View A&M, Alabama State, Jackson State and North Carolina Central, respectively. Prairie View A&M and Alabama State both received two first-place votes, behind South Carolina's 12.
