Robert Kraft made the Patriots’ offer sound impossible to refuse. Christian Gonzalez would be the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL and the highest-paid player in franchise history. So why has Gonzalez not signed? Because “highest-paid” is a headline, not a contract.
The guarantees matter. Cash flow and structure matter. Right now, Gonzalez has reason to let the cornerback market keep moving before he locks himself into a number New England will spend the next five years celebrating.
Gonzalez is scheduled to make a $2.259 million base salary in 2026, but he is also represented by the same agency as Seattle star Devon Witherspoon. Both young corners are positioned for extensions, while recent deals have already pushed the top of the position above $31 million annually.
