European countries are facing one of its biggest governance disputes in recent years, with UEFA member associations reportedly prepared to boycott future FIFA competitions which includes the FIFA World Cup.
Why did UEFA decide to boycott the World Cup?
The decision to boycott the World Cup by UEFA was over FIFA President Gianni Infantino's controversial proposal to sell stakes in a new commercial entity managing the tournament.
UEFA convened an emergency meeting involving its 55 member associations to discuss a unified response after FIFA unveiled plans to create a commercial subsidiary, known as FIFA Forward Enterprise, valued at around $20 billion. The proposal would allow private investors to acquire a minority stake in the company that would oversee commercial rights such as broadcasting, sponsorship, and ticketing.
