A Catholic priest, Fr Paulinus Odozor, has warned that the growing emphasis on prosperity preaching is driving many young people away from the Christian faith by presenting a distorted understanding of the Gospel.
Speaking at the 2026 Church Life Africa (CLA) Summer Conference, attended by scores of Catholic youths, Fr Paulinus said Christianity should not be reduced to promises of wealth, miracles, and material success.
According to him, many young Christians become disillusioned when they are taught that faith guarantees prosperity or a life free from hardship.
“We have created the impression that the story of Jesus is only about salvation in this world,” he said.
“Christ preached the Gospel, healed the sick and fed the hungry, but He never promised that those who follow Him would never suffer.”
