A few souvenirs and trinkets from the first Fox Cities Marathon in 1991 are tucked away at the Community First Credit Union headquarters on Dresang Way in Fox Crossing.
As she pulled a few of those mementos from a box and glanced at them during a recent visit, Gloria West couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride and accomplishment.
And why not?
West has been called the matriarch of the running community in northeast Wisconsin and, if that’s true, her unquestioned favorite offspring is the Fox Cities Marathon.
With the annual fall weekend of events preparing to celebrate its 35th anniversary Sept. 18-20, West is basking in its sustained success.
“I look at the marathon, and I’ve made this analogy of a beautiful swan floating down the Fox River with a lot of pride and just floating because they’re connecting all the different communities in the Fox Cities,” West said.
