Warde Manuel’s final months at Michigan will come with a substantial price tag.
The longtime athletic director is set to receive a lump-sum payment of $7,143,346 after he resigns on Dec. 31, according to settlement details obtained by The Detroit News . Michigan also will contribute $108,000 toward his retirement, cover $82,000 in legal fees and extend retiree benefits that normally require 20 years of university service.
The agreement also bars Manuel from working as an athletic director or senior athletic adviser at another Big Ten school for two years.
Michigan Pays to Close the Manuel Era Manuel signed a five-year extension less than two years ago that reportedly paid him about $2.4 million annually and ran through June 2030. He still had roughly $9 million in compensation remaining, making the negotiated payment smaller than the full value of the contract.
