CHICAGO — The Yankees ’ 1-0 eighth-inning lead was in jeopardy last Friday night in Philadelphia when the Phillies loaded the bases with one out and Kyle Schwarber at the plate.
The first pitch from lefty reliever Brent Headrick was a slider in the dirt. If it went past the catcher, it would have been a game-tying wild pitch with the lead runner on third base. Ali Sanchez positioned himself quickly and took the correct angle so the ball bounced off his chest protector and stopped just in front of him.
Scare averted, Headrick wound up retiring Schwarber on a liner to left field that wasn’t deep enough to score the tying run on a sacrifice fly.
Next up, after Trea Turner fell behind in the count 0-2, Headrick bounced two sliders in a row into the dirt. Sanchez again blocked them, kept the ball right in front of him, and the baserunner did not advance.
