There’s no key. There’s no ignition button inside the cockpit. If you stalled an F1 car on track before 2014, your race was over – you simply waited for a marshal and a retirement slip. The process of getting one of these engines running is less “turn the key” and more “coordinate a small army.” This is why:
“I’m a Formula 1engineer,” Audi F1 team engineer João Machado told his followers on TikTok. “And starting an F1 car is nothing like starting a normal one. There is no key, no button, so how do we actually do it? Well, you cannot just fire it up. The parts inside the engine are built to such tight tolerances that if you start it cold, you risk damaging it straight away.
“So the first thing to do is warm it up. And I mean while the engine is still completely off. It’s started by circulating through it pre-heated oil and coolant using external rigs, and you’re watching everything…
