Former Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera is standing by one of the most talked-about disciplinary decisions of his coaching career—benching franchise quarterback Cam Newton for the opening series of a game because he violated the team’s dress code by not wearing a tie.
Looking back on the incident, Rivera said the decision had nothing to do with Newton’s status as the team’s biggest star. Instead, it was about maintaining consistency and accountability throughout the locker room.
“Players want direction. Second, they want consistency. If you’re consistent, you treat everybody the same and do things the right way with them,” Rivera explained.
