The Fort Mackinac Never Sweats will compete against the Portland Blue Sox in a vintage base ball game at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 25 at the old ball field behind Fort Mackinac on Mackinac Island.
The game has become a summer tradition and is a showcase for how “base ball” used to be played at the fort, barehanded and by gentlemen’s rules. The crowd will get to see players fined for smoking cigars, learn an old-fashioned cheer and hear players use 1880s base ball terminology.
“The vintage base ball game began in 2003 as a special event with the Summer of Sports, that numerous museums around Michigan took part in,” said Phil “Pops” Porter, the former Mackinac State Historic Parks director and co-founder and shortstop for the Never Sweats. “We played a game of vintage base ball not knowing it would become an annual tradition.
