It was just after 7 a.m. when Aisha arranged her tomatoes and peppers at a bustling market in Lagos. Like millions of hardworking Nigerians, she wasn’t thinking about tax laws. Her concerns were more immediate: Would customers come? Would prices remain stable? Would she make enough to pay her children’s school fees?
Several kilometers away, Chinedu unlocked the doors of his small printing business. His worries were different. Electricity bills had increased. Customers were demanding lower prices. Then came another concern: “I’ve heard there are new tax laws. Does this mean I’ll pay more tax?”
Across town, Tunde, a young graduate working in a technology company, glanced at his pay slip before heading to work. He had heard colleagues discussing changes to Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) taxation but had little idea what they meant for his monthly income.
