Ghanaian government has approved a proposal to extend the presidential term from four to five years and reduce the minimum age requirement for presidential candidates to 35.
The West African nation, regarded as one of Africa’s leading producers of gold and cocoa, has enjoyed uninterrupted democratic governance since the adoption of its current constitutional order in 1992.
President John Dramani Mahama constituted a committee last year to undertake a review of the country’s constitution, and the panel presented its final report to him on Thursday.
Briefing journalists after the submission, Justice Minister Dominic Ayine said the government had accepted the recommendation to increase the president’s tenure from four to five years.
“The government has accepted the recommendation to extend the term of office of the president from four years to five years,” Ayine said.
