With rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli currently leading the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship and Lewis Hamilton finding his stride over at Ferrari, George Russell’s side of the Mercedes garage is in desperate need of a stable weekend. However, the technical gremlins relentlessly plaguing Russell’s W17 have now evolved from cracked engine blocks into something much more alarming: phantom throttle inputs.
Following yet another compromised session for the British driver, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff was pressed on the exact nature of Russell’s latest mechanical setback. Speaking to Sky Sports F1 , Wolff revealed a highly unsettling drive-by-wire issue that essentially caused the car to accelerate independently of the driver’s foot.
