The Boston Red Sox traded pitcher Connelly Early to the Washington Nationals for infielder Curtis Mead on July 26. The unofficial start to trade deadline season — teams can’t swap major league players after Aug. 3 — started off with a head-scratcher.
Mead, 25, was a .238/.300/.317 hitter from 2019-25 with the Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago White Sox. Early, 24, had a 3.44 ERA in 17 starts for the Red Sox this season, is under team control for five more years, and was a consensus Top-100 prospect coming into the season.

The Red Sox arguably overpaid for Mead if he was healthy. One day into his Red Sox career, Mead was hurt.
