Cathy Engelbert opened her annual midseason press conference Saturday in Chicago by addressing player safety and online abuse, and she condemned the racism, misogyny, and homophobia directed at WNBA players.
Engelbert referenced the meeting she held with players earlier in the week. The press conference came hours before tip-off of the All-Star Game at the United Center.
Engelbert and leadership from the WNBPA met by video Tuesday night at the union's request. The call included the union's executive committee and its Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee. The league and the union released a joint statement Wednesday describing the conversation as being about the recent increase in racist, hateful, and abusive messages directed at players. The league committed in that statement to continuing to enhance security resources and to working with the union on collaborations…
