DES MOINES, Iowa– Local umpires say there is no longer an umpire shortage, but a crisis. However, one group is looking to train today’s youth into tomorrow’s umpires in a weekly camp held Wednesday nights.
UMPS Care is holding a free, six-week course targeted toward youth aged 13-18 to learn how to be an umpire in the classroom and on the field.
The course honors the legacy of former MLB Umpire and Des Moines native Eric Cooper, who died seven years ago. His goal was to develop younger umpires. Now, his mission lives on.
“For me to come tonight and see all these young kids that are learning how to be umpires and even more importantly, great young men and women, it’s something I’m really proud of, and I know if Coop was around, he would sure be proud to see his name attached to such a quality program here in Des Moines, Iowa, in his hometown,” said Joe Nelson, a friend of Cooper’s and…
