Jon Duffie’s first goal at the White Marlin Open is simple: Don’t crash the boat. His second is only slightly more complicated: Catch another white marlin that could be worth a few million dollars.
Duffie has captained two winners in four years, but the nerves he described never totally go away.
The tournament grew from fishing grounds opened by the storm-carved Ocean City Inlet in 1933. By 1935, The Baltimore Sun was documenting the first white marlin brought through it. The inaugural White Marlin Open drew 57 boats, 150 anglers and a $20,000 purse in 1974. This year’s 53rd edition, running Aug. 3-8, is expected to offer more than $10 million.
Another familiar name could add to the spectacle. Michael Jordan’s 82-foot boat, Catch 23 , is registered, although organizers cannot confirm whether the basketball legend will fish.
