The Boston Red Sox made the first move of the trade deadline season, acquiring infielder Curtis Mead from the Washington Nationals in exchange for left-handed pitcher Connelly Early on Saturday night. The 25-year-old has played all around the infield during his now four-year major league career, giving the Red Sox more versatility regardless of how they use him.
Here's what you need to know about how Mead fits into the Red Sox plans:
Defensive impact Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow met with the media on Sunday morning to discuss the move to acquire Mead, saying the plan is for the 25-year-old to take over duties at second base, but also noting that he will be used all around the field in order to give both third baseman Caleb Durbin and first baseman Willson Contreras some time off their feet.
