When Tony Brissette’s Wachusett Regional High School’s boys' tennis team beat Fitchburg, 5-0, in 2014, Brissette notched his 200 th coaching win.
Brissette’s teams won 113 more times until he retired at the end of last season after 27 years coaching tennis at Massachusetts’ biggest regional high school and establishing himself among the state’s elite high school tennis coaches.
At 77, Brissette said he never thought about retirement, and didn’t plan it – like the late legendary UCLA basketball coach, John Wooden, one of the sports figures Brissette most admires, who said: “Don't ever believe anybody when they tell you that they knew when I was going to retire.”
