I remember the cramped, the humid halls of our university’s student center, the air thick with the scent of old books and ambition… the Society for Ethics and Leadership (SEAL) was locked in a debate that would define our semester. It was 2010 I think, and the question was a familiar, aching one: Does Africa have a glorious past? One side, fiery and impassioned, defended the legacy of Nubia and the builders of Great Zimbabwe, arguing that the ancient Egyptians were black, and that our history was stolen, not absent.
The other side, more tempered, offered a different kind of liberation. They proposed that perhaps we didn’t need a grandiose past.
