Former Benfica president, Luis Filipe Vieira has stated that Cristiano Ronaldo may no longer be a guaranteed starter under the new Portugal manager, Jorge Jesus.
Jesus took over the Selecao following Roberto Martinez's exit after they crashed out from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
During Martinez's tenure, Ronaldo and his teammates advanced to the Round of 16 in the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, where they were defeated 1-0 by the eventual champions, Spain, with Mikel Merino scoring a last-minute goal.
Having made his sixth and likely final appearance at the quadrennial event, Ronaldo is expected to continue his international career under compatriot, Jorge Jesus, who has previously managed Benfica on two occasions.
“I believe he understands how to handle that situation and will manage it effectively,” Vieira remarked to Antena 1 (via GOAL).
