Photo by Nic Antaya/Getty Images The NBA is motoring ahead with its plans to expand into Europe with a new, self-contained league.
As far as the structure of NBA Europe, it’s very much wet cement. But the model that has been suggested is to have at least 12 permanent franchises in 12 cities, with a further four spots in the league available through some form of merit-based system.
There has been significant interest from private equity firms, ultra high net worth individuals and family offices in buying one of the 12 franchises up for grabs, the NBA say.
To get the league off the ground, NBA Europe is – to an extent – going to leverage star power.
Luka Doncic is even part of a consortium who have bought an Italian team with a view to acquiring the Rome-based NBA franchise, while several European soccer club owners have discussed the possibility of expanding into basketball under the…
