The Mubadala DC Open is barely underway, and the American men are struggling. Newlywed Tommy Paul lost. His result was not surprising given the fact that tennis was a lower priority because of his recent wedding. Hometown hero Frances Tiafoe lost a tough singles match on Monday night and pulled out of doubles (with Nick Kyrgios) on Tuesday because of a wrist injury . Ben Shelton lost in doubles, and his singles match was halted due to rain.
Brandon Nakashima and Alex Michelsen join Taylor Fritz in the second round, but Marcos Giron, Learner Tien, and Mackenzie McDonald (who lost in the all-American matchup to Michelsen) are out of the tournament.
Zachary Svajda , who lost in qualifying, but got in as a lucky loser, lost his first round match on Monday and later admitted on social media that he has hand, foot, and mouth disease, a contagious viral illness.
