Rayo Vallecano have played at Vallecas Stadium since 1976 -Credit:Florencia Tan Jun/Getty Images Just over two weeks away from Rayo Vallecano’s first La Liga game of the season, the Madrid-based club has been forced to abandon its home stadium.
The 14,700-seater Vallecas Stadium, the club’s home since 1976, is owned by the local government and used by Rayo under a concession. However, conditions at the ageing ground have deteriorated to such an extent that the government has stepped in and published a report, forcing updates to be made before the club can return.
“We've tried to get this back on track, but we've reached a point of no return -- the lack of maintenance has been certified. The club wasn't complying, so authorities had to take action,” Madrid’s regional head of sport, Mariano de Paco, told reporters, via Reuters .
