James Tronstein, a blue-chip recruit who ranked as the No. 40 player in the 2026 class by Perfect Game, will join Vanderbilt baseball's star-studded freshman class after not signing with the Houston Astros as a 15th-round pick.
Tronstein confirmed with The Tennessean on July 24 that he would not sign.
Tronstein was the No. 170 player in the 2026 MLB Draft by MLB Pipeline and could have been selected anywhere between rounds 2-5. The Astros selected him in the 15th round, likely as a backup in case one of their other players did not sign.
Listed as 5-11, 170 pounds, Tronstein is undersized but has big power and put up some of the best exit velocities at the MLB Draft Combine. He has an aggressive approach that Vanderbilt hitting coach Jason Esposito could help tone down.
