D espite warnings by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is among the areas at risk of flooding this year, indiscriminate refuse dumping and the blockage of drainage channels with solid waste remain widespread across satellite towns, Abuja Metro reports.
Across the Nyanya, Karu Market, Orozo, Kurudu and Karshi corridors of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), heaps of refuse line major roads and clog drainage channels, exposing residents and traders to foul odours, environmental pollution, disease outbreaks and flooding.
Although sanitation workers occasionally evacuate the waste, residents say the clean-up efforts are irregular and inadequate, allowing fresh refuse to accumulate within days.
