At the EYN unofficial Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Maiduguri, many families go to bed hungry, while children remain out of school, making restful sleep almost impossible for their parents.
In separate interviews with Daily Trust, many of them recounted how they were once prosperous large-scale farmers before Boko Haram insurgents forced them from their communities. Today, they struggle to cultivate small plots of rented farmland simply to feed their families and earn a little income.
In their desperation, many fell into the hands of loan sharks who offered high-interest loans, which they invested in rented farmlands at Tungushe, about 35 kilometres from Maiduguri.
Their hopes, however, were dashed when armed herders allegedly invaded the farms, claiming to have bought the land from Boko Haram insurgents, and allowed their livestock to graze freely on the crops.
