John Anderson, the University of Minnesota's longtime baseball coach whose teams won 1,390 games and appeared in 18 NCAA tournaments, died Sunday after suffering a cardiac arrest at his home in Wayzata on Wednesday.
Anderson had been hospitalized for several days. He was 71.
Anderson was two years into retirement after working as the Gophers’ coach for 43 years, a job he started when he was 26 years old and still working in sales for Emery Air Freight.
He had settled happily into retirement, telling the Pioneer Press on July 9, “I’m glad to be on the other side of the fence,” enjoying time with his extended family.
As a pitcher at UMN in the early 1970s, Anderson's first nickname among teammates and coaches was “Walt,” but it later transitioned to his uniform number, 14. When he retired, No. 14 became the sixth number retired from the Gophers baseball program.
