The Central Bank of Nigeria's (CBN) data localisation directive is expected to create significant long-term opportunities for Nigeria's digital infrastructure sector by driving sustained demand for local data centres and sovereign cloud services, according to Adebola Omololu, co-founder of GFA Technologies Group.
The CBN recently directed banks, fintech companies, mobile money operators and other payment service providers to ensure that payment transaction data generated within Nigeria is stored and managed locally in compliance with data protection regulations. Full compliance is expected by January 1, 2027.
Omololu described the directive as more than a regulatory obligation, saying it represents a major catalyst for the next phase of Nigeria's digital infrastructure development.
