Mr. Hockey is officially Mr. Bridge, but Detroit Red Wings icon Gordie Howe was more than just the name on the bridge as the Gordie Howe International Bridge opened for crossings this week.
He was a collectible keepsake.
Each of the 7,500 people crossing the bridge on its first day of business was receiving an old-style postcard. The front of the card depicts Howe skating in his Red Wings uniform. Over his left shoulder is an embossed red No. 9. To his left is a photo of his namesake bridge. The card features the signature “Mr. Hockey.”
