CITAD opposes bill on mandatory physical offices for social media firms

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has opposed a proposed amendment to the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, seeking to compel social media platforms, data controllers and data processors to establish physical offices in Nigeria, warning that the move could undermine digital rights, discourage innovation and slow the country's expanding digital economy. Speaking at a press conference held at the organisation's headquarters on Friday, in Kano, CITAD's Executive Director, Dr. Yunusa Zakari Ya'u, represented by the organisation's Digital Rights Officer, Ali Sabo, described the bill sponsored by Senator Ned Munir Nwoko as a well-intentioned initiative that could nevertheless produce unintended consequences for Nigeria's technology ecosystem. …
