CHARLEVOIX — For much of Charlevoix’s Ryan Shay Mile , before runners descend the Bridge Street hill, the leaders aren’t known to the crowd waiting below.
But, for many of the Charlevoix natives in the crowd for the first-ever high school boys Ryan Shay Mile event on Saturday, July 25, there was a pretty solid guess as to who was leading the pack.
Many of the race fans were very familiar with Hunter Eaton’s talent , so seeing the Charlevoix senior-to-be with a solid lead down the home stretch surprised few.
The hometown standout and reigning track and cross country state champion crossed the finish line in 4 minutes, 10.3 seconds for the runaway victory.
“It felt awesome,” Eaton said. “I’m happy they added a high school mile to this event. It’s a great event and everyone was hyped for it.”
Eaton felt enough in the lead heading down Bridge Street that he peaked behind his left…
