Artificial intelligence is often described as a software revolution. We hear about chatbots that answer questions, computers that write reports, and algorithms that make businesses more productive. Yet beneath the excitement lies a quieter question that Nigeria has barely begun to ask. Who will generate the electricity needed to power this revolution?
Throqughout history, every technological transformation has depended on energy transformation. Coal powered the Industrial Revolution. Oil transformed transport and manufacturing. Electricity reshaped the twentieth century. Artificial intelligence belongs to the same tradition. Although it operates in the digital world, it depends on physical infrastructure: power plants, transmission lines, fibre-optic networks and data centres that operate around the clock.
For Nigeria, the challenge is even greater because AI is arriving at a time…
