Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables is one of the greatest defensive minds in the history of college football. Venables has won three national championships as a defensive coordinator in his career.
He's brought that defensive prowess back to Norman. In four years, he moved Oklahoma from the No. 122 defense in college football to a top 10 unit last season. His creativity and aggressive playcalling often times confuse even some of the best quarterbacks in the sport. The quarterbacks he does best against are freshman or redshirt freshman starters.
In fact, according to CBS Sports , Venables is an impressive 22-5 since 2012 against freshman or redshirt freshman quarterbacks. Last season, his defense feasted on Michigan Wolverines true freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood. The top player in the 2025 class threw for 142 yards, while completing 9-of-24 passes.
