The Utah Mammoth didn't hand John Marino an eight-year, $54 million extension simply because he was coming off the best offensive season of his career.
They did it because every indication points to a defenseman whose impact extends far beyond the scoresheet.
Marino has quietly become one of the pillars of Utah's blue line since arriving from the New Jersey Devils in 2024, combining elite puck movement, dependable defensive play and the ability to elevate those around him. As the Mammoth continue building toward long-term contention, the organization made it clear this week that Marino is viewed as a cornerstone worth investing in.
General manager Bill Armstrong believes the veteran defenseman is still ascending.
“Defensemen mature later,” Armstrong said. “I still think he’s getting better. I think he’s an elite puck mover.”
