Leaders from Southern Nigeria and the Middle Belt have insisted that the presidency should remain in the South after the 2027 general elections, saying the arrangement is necessary for national political stability.
The position was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the regular meeting of the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF) held in Abuja on Tuesday.
The communiqué, read by the forum’s chairman and leader of Afenifere, Oladipo Olaitan, said the body reaffirmed its earlier resolution that the next president should emerge from the South.
The meeting, held at the Abuja liaison office of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), was attended by delegates of Afenifere, the Middle Belt Forum, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and PANDEF.
