Nigeria athletics targets 7 gold medals at 2026 Commonwealth Games

The President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa, has expressed satisfaction with the formidable athletics squad representing the country at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, which officially opened yesterday, July 23.

According to the AFN, the six-day track and field competition will run from Monday, July 27 to Saturday, August 1 at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow.

Okowa, who is leading the AFN contingent, said the arrival of marquee athletes—including women’s 100m hurdles world record holder Tobi Amusan, reigning sprint sensation Kanyinsola Ajayi, Favour Ashe, Olympic men’s 400m finalist Samuel Ogazi, Rosemary Chukwuma, shot put veteran Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, and javelin thrower Chinecherem Nnamdi—has bolstered the federation’s target of winning seven gold medals.
